She’s just one of many dating app users who’ve grown dissatisfied with the mechanical exercise of swiping for love – an act that now feels as dispassionate as scrolling through Netflix. For these disillusioned daters, it feels as though the golden age of online dating has ended – even though the sector appears to be booming. The US$3-billion American dating industry has seen a 140-per-cent increase in revenue since 2009, according to IBISWorld. The market research firm counts approximately 55 million mobile dating app users in North America alone, and estimates that number will grow by 25 per cent next year.
Chen, for example, still uses dating apps, but does so begrudgingly. She and her girlfriends regularly send each other outrageous texts they receive from men and laugh about them. Others, such as Anna Heissler, a 26-year-old executive assistant also living in Toronto, describe the apps as a “necessary evil.” And others still are looking to slower forms of finding a mate online or throwing in the towel entirely, preferring instead to revert back to the old-fashioned ways of meeting someone: introductions from family and friends, chance meetings at a gym, or at singles events.
Online dating services allow users to become "members" by creating a profile and uploading personal information including (but not limited to) age, gender, sexual orientation, location, and appearance. Most services also encourage members to add photos or videos to their profile. Once a profile has been created, members can view the profiles of other members of the service, using the visible profile information to decide whether or not to initiate contact. Most services offer digital messaging, while others provide additional services such as webcasts, online chat, telephone chat (VOIP), and message boards. Members can constrain their interactions to the online space, or they can arrange a date to meet in person.
Launched by clinical psychologist Dr. Neil Clark Warren, eHarmony.com is a go-to if you want a serious, long-term relationship — which explains how 4% of U.S. marriages have taken place thanks to the site, according to Harris Interactive. eHarmony is also known for their unique matching system that compares 29 dimensions of compatibility to pair their members.
For many modern daters, the name “Tinder" should be accompanied by the Darth Vader theme song. The truth is, no app embodies the “necessary evil” aspect of swiping the way Tinder does. And it’s not even Tinder’s fault: As a pioneer of the current dating app format, Tinder’s utter ubiquity means everyone has an opinion about it. And because, as we've established, the dating rigamarole kind of sucks in general, that means a lot of people have negative opinions about it. But you have to hand it to Tinder, they really did change the game (for better or worse).
Searching is easy with Amigos. You can filter out your searches on the bottom so you can zoom in what you’re looking for. You can search by age, location, sexual orientation, race, interests and so on. You can also filter by who is online and who is a new member. The only downside in finding potential matches is there may not be a whole lot of matches in your area.
One place where sexuality was more often referenced in detail was the “Favourite on-screen sex scene” box, which invited profile authors to make a cultural reference (to a movie or TV show) that indicates something about their own sexual preferences, desires, or fantasies. However, not all those who responded did so with a specific example. F1-33 states that she has “way too many” favourites in this category, but that in general she prefers “more of a vulnerable charge and emotional risk”; while F2-31 also avoids picking just one scene but describes an ideal that “would involve sensuality and desire.… Nothing is sexier than wanting to touch but holding back to make the desire last.” Instead of responding directly to the prompt, each of these women chose to articulate a theoretical version of “on-screen” sex that reflected their own preferences and desires.
Opinions and usage of online dating services also differ widely. A 2005 study of data collected by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that individuals are more likely to use an online dating service if they use the Internet for a greater number of tasks, and less likely to use such a service if they are trusting of others. It is possible that the mode of online dating resonates with some participants' conceptual orientation towards the process of finding a romantic partner. That is, online dating sites use the conceptual framework of a "marketplace metaphor" to help people find potential matches, with layouts and functionalities that make it easy to quickly browse and select profiles in a manner similar to how one might browse an online store. Under this metaphor, members of a given service can both "shop" for potential relationship partners and "sell" themselves in hopes of finding a successful match.
One of the most well-known dating sites, eHarmony takes its matchmaking very seriously – their ‘Compatibility Matching System’ is actually patented. It took them 35 years to perfect their Relationship Questionnaire, which pairs you up with people you’re actually compatible with, and the whole process has been specifically tailored to the UK with the help of Oxford University.

This also means if things don’t go well at first, your friend never has to know about their online dating fail and can simply look for more fish in the sea. The app is free to download, and you need to verify yourself as a wingman to get your friend set up. It went live in 2017 and is currently available for both Android and iOS. However, there isn't a desktop version.
The Match iteration of flirting is sending someone a “wink,” and you can search through the Match database to find “winkable” people. The service will also provide you with personalized matches on a daily basis, which take your interests into consideration. To really make the most of Match, however, you’re going to need a subscription, which can get a little pricey — the cheapest option currently available will run you $21 a month for six months. A premium subscription does allow you to see who’s recently looked at your profile and who has liked your pictures, though, and includes a host of other features.
Once you’re ready to take the plunge, signing up for InterracialCupid is easy–if a little more involved than other matching sites. It will take a couple minutes to fill out your profile, as it does request more than just basic information. This is not so great if you’re looking to get started in a flash, but awesome news for people looking for quality profiles on a dating site. There’s even a great bonus: after you upload a photo, if you go through the verification process, you can get a free paid membership for three months.
When we take a closer look at where Tinder is downloaded and who is spending, a few things stand out from the data. From a download perspective, the US is the place to go if you’re looking for love on Tinder, especially if you have an iPhone. While US users account for 25% of downloads on Android, they account for 34% of all iOS downloads. To put that into perspective, this puts the US download share 9% ahead of Tinder’s second largest market on Android (Brazil) and 26% ahead of it next largest iOS market (UK). This means American users have a much deeper pool of potential matches to choose from, giving them a greater chance of finding that special someone.
HER’s slogan is that it’s for queer women and made by queer women. This app is both for social and dating but has more of a social media kind of feel to it with the ability to add friends to your profile and look at other users’ friends list. The OkCupid app is much more like a traditional dating site than most apps, because that's what it used to be, and still is, with the added convenience that you can now use it on your phone. You set up a profile which includes questions about things like your interests, lifestyle and what you're looking for in a relationship. You then get to browse profiles which will display a match percentage based on how much you have in common. People who use OkCupid find this a helpful way to filter through potential dates and find someone with whom they're going to have lots in common.
In order to sign up, you must have a Facebook or Instagram page as that’s the only way to make an account. It will import some of your basic profile information, but you will also have to add other things, such as sexuality, relationship status, height, the type of female you are (i.e. lesbian, FTM, bisexual, gender fluid) and so on. HER recommends an upload of eight photos for your profile, but you can veer off of that and add more or less if you want. They do have a verification process, which is good because you know you are talking to real people and not catfishers looking to capitalize on your photos.
A number of attributes were regularly referenced or implicated (as desirable) by both men and women; many users sought to associate both themselves and their ideal matches with these qualities, which included creativity, intelligence, “passion” (roughly defined as an enthusiasm for something), maturity, confidence, selflessness, honesty, morality, and a good sense of humour. Match.com has a large database of singles, but it can take longer to strike up a conversation, say compared to other dating apps, such as OkCupid and Tinder.
The downside to this app is it's built-in elitism. It's meant to feel exclusive, and the language used in the marketing materials isn't exactly warm and fuzzy. For example, one of the website's taglines is, "We do the scouting and the vetting, you do the matching and the petting." Still, if an exclusive and upscale dating app experience is what you’re looking for, The League could be for you.

Consolidation within the online dating industry has led to different newspapers and magazines now advertising the same website database under different names. Whereas before, people had very little exposure to online dating, today almost 50% of people know of someone who use the services or has met their loved one through the service. After the iPhone launch in 2007, online dating data has only increased as application usage increased. In 2005, only 10% of 18-24 year olds reported to have used online dating services; this number increased to over 27% of this population. Making this target demographic the largest number of users for most applications. When Pew Research Center conducted a study in 2016, they found that 59% of U.S. adults agreed that online dating is a good way to meet people compared to 44% in 2005. This increase in usage by this target group can be justified by their increased use of smartphones which lead them to use these smartphone dating apps. A new kind of literacy is require to “sell” the self in this environment, because online dating profiles are complex texts that require “unique [communicative] skills and strategies” (Whitty, 2007a, p. 57). Users must employ not only their specific knowledge of the Internet as a medium, but also their skills at constructing an appropriate self-presentation through textual and visual cues. Given that there is a higher degree of possible control over “impression management” in online communication, it seems unsurprising that people “are very strategic in the ways they present themselves online” and that they “are very aware of the need to construct a profile that not only attracts others, but will also attract their ‘ideal’ romantic partner” (Whitty, 2007a, p. 58; Whitty, 2007b, pp. 7–8).

Hinge makes itself unique by providing prompts to answer instead of making you sweat through the bio-writing process: from, “The key to my heart is…” to, “Where to find me at a party?” and, “I’ll pick the first part of the date, you pick the second.” Additionally, Hinge opts out of the swipe-based premise by allowing users to like or comment on individual profile photos and prompt answers. From there, the liked user has the option to start the conversation.
I was actually happy to see that OKCupid took some time to make sure people that sign up are serious about dating. Along with you having to fill out your basic profile questions, like age, education, hobbies, sexual orientation and all that, it takes you through a ride of, yup, you guessed it…..Personality test questions. It’s not nearly as painful and tiresome as eHarmony, and it is optional and multiple-choice based, but it can take some time. More on this in a minute.
One thing to note if you don't fall into the cis-hetero dating pool: While most of the apps reviewed here are inclusive, there are those that are friendlier to the LGBTQ community than others. For example, OkCupid goes beyond forcing users to choose between being a male or female, including options like Hijra, genderfluid, and two-spirit. If you're a man seeking a man or a woman seeking a woman, you'll want to steer clear of eharmony: It doesn't even give you the option of a same-sex match.
