Almost all dating apps have a few features in common. That includes location-based results, profiles, and some method of communication. All ten of the dating apps on this list have those features. The first feature, location, makes recommendations from us to you a little difficult. Most big cities have a decent supply of potential matches for most types of people. However, your success in any given dating app is ultimately reliant on how popular that app is in your area.
In the profiles sampled, users did not list their incomes or financial status, but quite a few made comments about work and almost all indicated something in the “occupation” category. Education, a category filled in almost all the profiles, could indicate income level and occupation indirectly. Job titles did not noticeably reflect gender norms, though women seemed to have chosen more communication-oriented jobs (such as “therapist,” “translator,” “comms advisor”) compared with men’s (“finance,” “entrepreneur,” “working for the man,” “robotics mfg”).
The downside to this app is it's built-in elitism. It's meant to feel exclusive, and the language used in the marketing materials isn't exactly warm and fuzzy. For example, one of the website's taglines is, "We do the scouting and the vetting, you do the matching and the petting." Still, if an exclusive and upscale dating app experience is what you’re looking for, The League could be for you.
Launched by clinical psychologist Dr. Neil Clark Warren, eHarmony.com is a go-to if you want a serious, long-term relationship — which explains how 4% of U.S. marriages have taken place thanks to the site, according to Harris Interactive. eHarmony is also known for their unique matching system that compares 29 dimensions of compatibility to pair their members.
Tinder was the first ‘swiping’ app to launch back in 2012. Today, the idea of swiping ‘left for no’ and ‘right for yes’ has become something of a cultural phenomenon (which could be why Tinder is the go-to app for many love-seekers). The app focuses on your location using GPS and you browse photos and bios of potential matches in your area. It uses your Facebook info to create your profile – but don’t worry, none of your Tinder exploits will ever be posted to Facebook.
In 2017 Darlene Daggett, QVC's president for U.S. commerce from 2002 to 2007, filed a lawsuit against matchmaking agency Kelleher International. The company, owned by Amber Kelleher-Andrews agreed to settle within hours of Daggett filing the lawsuit. Neither talked about the case, citing a non-disclosure agreement, but Daggett's lawsuit gives plenty of detail about her grievances with the California-based company. 'Due to her senior level position in a local firm, [she] felt that social dating sites did not provide her with the degree of screening and privacy she was looking for,' the lawsuit states. She opted in for the company's most expensive plan, the $150,000 CEO level, which guaranteed her matches from around the world and the personal attention of Kelleher-Andrews. But Daggett says she did not get what she paid for. Instead, she suffered brief romantic entanglements with increasingly disastrous men.
I approach these questions through a discourse analysis of 20 dating profiles taken from a popular website, Nerve.com. I use gender theory and discourse analysis to show how identity is being constructed and projected as gendered in various ways by these individuals, looking to earlier studies of print and online dating advertisements, in particular Jagger (1998) and Coupland (1996), as a starting point for my analysis. I argue that due to long-term shifts in the way we signal our identities or identifications, and to changes in the format of the advertisements (from print to Internet “profiles”), gender identity is “indexed” primarily through references to other, lifestyle-affiliated categories as well as through more direct discursive cues. Examples discussed in my analysis include descriptions of one’s self and of one’s desired partner; signification of lifestyle through references to activities and practices, consumer items (such as food, technology), and culture (books, music, films); and implicating the state of one’s body through references to physical activity and appearance.

I was also on two elite dating apps: The League and Raya. Both require applications before joining. The League uses your LinkedIn profile for information like education and job position for membership. Raya, an exclusive dating app for creatives and celebrities, is the most difficult to join and refers on Instagram and connections in your contact list.
For those seeking for an exclusively app-based experience, there's also Jdate's JSwipe, a location-based, Facebook-connected dating app that includes popular features like profile swiping. While JSwipe is primarily targeted at relationship-minded Jewish singles in their 20s or 30s, world of mouth has it that grandmothers love swiping through to find a match for their grandkids - so much so that the company refers to themselves as 'Bubbe-approved'!
Gay rights groups have complained that certain websites that restrict their dating services to heterosexual couples are discriminating against homosexuals. Homosexual customers of the popular eHarmony dating website have made many attempts to litigate discriminatory practices. eHarmony was sued in 2007 by a lesbian claiming that "[s]uch outright discrimination is hurtful and disappointing for a business open to the public in this day and age." In light of discrimination by sexual orientation by dating websites, some services such as GayDar.net and Chemistry.com cater more to homosexual dating.
In order to sign up, you must have a Facebook or Instagram page as that’s the only way to make an account. It will import some of your basic profile information, but you will also have to add other things, such as sexuality, relationship status, height, the type of female you are (i.e. lesbian, FTM, bisexual, gender fluid) and so on. HER recommends an upload of eight photos for your profile, but you can veer off of that and add more or less if you want. They do have a verification process, which is good because you know you are talking to real people and not catfishers looking to capitalize on your photos.
