I was on Clover for quite some time but had forgotten it even existed until I started to throw this list together. I felt like it was a less successful hybrid of OkCupid and Tinder, and I also felt like the user base was pretty small, even though I live in an urban area with plenty of people who use a wide variety of dating apps. Clover says it has nearly 6 million users, 85 percent of whom are between the ages of 18 and 30.
There was no way we could discuss the best dating apps without mentioning the granddaddy of them all. Match was at the top of the dating game long before apps existed, and its experience shows. You don’t have to log into the app via Facebook — though you will have to go through a signup process that requires you to add a few photos, answer some questions about your gender and preferences, and create a username and password.
It’s not perfect. The quiz show format won’t appeal to everyone, and the slow burn and winner-takes-all aspect mean it’s going to be a lot harder to get a date than in other apps. Also, featured dater spots are currently only open to straight women, so there’s not much here for lesbians or gay men yet, though there are plans to expand to male bachelors and LGBTQ+ episodes. You also need to email the company to apply to be a featured dater, which means it’s not exactly a pick-up-and-go app if you’re wanting to be the featured dater. However, if you’re bored of regular dating apps, or if you’re simply attracted to the fun elements and the prospect of finding love is a bonus, then give Quiz Date Live a go.
Match has a free version, but the general consensus is that you need a paid subscription to have any luck on it. That's a hangover from the early days of online dating, when paying for membership to a site meant you were serious about settling down. But my friends and I have long since come to the conclusion that you might be a little too eager to find a significant other if you're paying to get dates, particularly given the abundance of free dating apps. There are definitely paid features on some dating apps that are worth the price, but I've yet to be able to justify shelling out cash for love.
Clover is a nice, clean, easy-to-use app with plenty of Australian users and a couple of interesting features. Like Tinder you get to look at a list of possible matches that you say yes or no to. But unlike Tinder you can filter your matches based on things like their relationship intention, interests, occupation and religion. Once you find someone you're interested in you can like them, message them or play twenty questions to find out how similar or different you are. Clover also offers on-demand dating which basically allows people to shortcut the small talk and go straight to setting up a meeting. The app is free but setting up a search filter on user profiles requires the premium version which starts from $29.99 per month.
The first thing you need to decide is how committed you are. As in, how much do you want to pay to make your heart go pitter-patter? Some apps, like Plenty of Fish, let you view profiles and send messages for free. Most of the others let you view your potential matches without charging, but make you pony up and subscribe if you want to actually reach out to them. While the monthly charges for the apps we review here range in price from $10 to more than $40, most offer a discount if you commit to a long-term subscription such as six months or a year. (You're not afraid of commitment, are you?) Then, there are all of the add-ons. Options—letting you pay to boost your ranking in search results, letting someone know that you are really, really interested in him or her or them, or undoing a dreaded left-swipe that was supposed to be a right-swipe—will cost you extra. While some apps may advertise themselves as free, all of them will try to get a buck from you in the end.

ChristianCupid.com: I can’t help but add the Cupid-based Christian site, ChristianCupid.com, because it has such a pretty interface. I have had so much success with the Cupid-based sites that I am probably one of the company’s biggest advocates. I found love on a Cupid Media site (BrazilCupid.com). With that said, I would use this site as a third option if your two options above don’t give you the results you were looking for.

A new kind of literacy is require to “sell” the self in this environment, because online dating profiles are complex texts that require “unique [communicative] skills and strategies” (Whitty, 2007a, p. 57). Users must employ not only their specific knowledge of the Internet as a medium, but also their skills at constructing an appropriate self-presentation through textual and visual cues. Given that there is a higher degree of possible control over “impression management” in online communication, it seems unsurprising that people “are very strategic in the ways they present themselves online” and that they “are very aware of the need to construct a profile that not only attracts others, but will also attract their ‘ideal’ romantic partner” (Whitty, 2007a, p. 58; Whitty, 2007b, pp. 7–8).
I approach these questions through a discourse analysis of 20 dating profiles taken from a popular website, Nerve.com. I use gender theory and discourse analysis to show how identity is being constructed and projected as gendered in various ways by these individuals, looking to earlier studies of print and online dating advertisements, in particular Jagger (1998) and Coupland (1996), as a starting point for my analysis. I argue that due to long-term shifts in the way we signal our identities or identifications, and to changes in the format of the advertisements (from print to Internet “profiles”), gender identity is “indexed” primarily through references to other, lifestyle-affiliated categories as well as through more direct discursive cues. Examples discussed in my analysis include descriptions of one’s self and of one’s desired partner; signification of lifestyle through references to activities and practices, consumer items (such as food, technology), and culture (books, music, films); and implicating the state of one’s body through references to physical activity and appearance.
How does it work? Lovestruck helps you target potential partners according to location and it covers many of the major cities across the world. It’s aimed at time-starved professionals, who due to busy work and social lives simply don’t have the time to date. Lovestruck helps put you in touch with people who are near you – be it where you work or live – to save you precious minutes or hours travelling to and from a date. The site also hosts regular events which are a fun, relaxed way to meet people.
Creating a profile on Interracial Match is fairly straightforward. You can begin with basic information such as name, age, gender, and location. This gets more detailed, with info on drinking/smoking, religion, and occupation. You’ll have to get even more in-depth with a short essay about yourself and what you’re looking for in a mate. This is a nice feature for folks trying to create a more comprehensive dating experience, but if you want a faster start, it might not be for you.
The app does an incredibly good job at collecting feedback from singles, using it to help increase your rate of success. Members are given a report card-style dashboard that shows them why users liked or passed on their profile, down to the specific reason, such as low-quality profile pictures, as well as offering ways to improve their likelihood of getting “liked.” For any online dater, this dashboard alone is a good (and free) tool to gauge how their profile is performing compared to others.
